Crooked Brewing opened their brewery tap in the York suburb of Acomb in 2019. Working on their website, I told their compelling story in a way it deserved…
The Crooked Tap, Acomb’s craft beer bar
It all began over a pint, like the best ideas always do — brewing fresh and flavoursome beer for the people of Yorkshire. We combined the brewing know-how of Steve Dawson and Andrew Evans — the founders of Leeds brewing school Learn To Brew — with the business experience of York entrepreneurs Mark Field-Gibson and Hudson Aschmann.
In an industrial unit on the old RAF base at Church Fenton, we turned our vision for a great micro-brewery into reality. The late nights and long weekends were worth it — our beers soon began to get a loyal following in Leeds and York.
Of course, every great brewery needs a great brewery tap. Walking past Acomb Green one day, Steve spotted the perfect site for a craft ale bar: ‘The dappled light struck me through the trees. It was a scene reminiscent of Jake Blues’ vision of ‘putting the band back together’ in The Blues Brothers (but obviously with less dancing).’
We began the job of turning the former motorcycle parts shop into a bar. It was ideal: a simple, industrial space with bare concrete floors, where the beer could really shine.
We opened The Crooked Tap, without fanfare, on a Friday in March 2019 because we had great beer and an amazing crowd of eager locals and both were good to go.
The response has been really gratifying. ‘As well as being a great drinking spot, we believe we can be a proper community hub in Acomb,’ says Mark. ‘If you have a book club, a mum’s group or just need a place to meet, then the Tap is the ideal space for you.’
Local musicians have already begun to take advantage of The Crooked Tap as a great venue — the beginnings of what we know is going to be a brilliant line-up of live music.
We’ve got super-fast Wi-Fi, so we’re perfect for a quick spot of ‘working from home’. And we love dogs, so do call in, before — and after — your walk.
Get in touch and tell me a bit about you and your project.
